Developed as part of the BA Visual Communication program under the theme "Lists", this editorial project explores the complex visual language and cultural significance of tattoos within the Soviet prison system. It examines how these tattoos functioned as a coded form of communication, identity expression, and social hierarchy among inmates — revealing meanings that extend far beyond their visual appearance.
The publication translates this hidden language into a structured editorial form, using typographic systems, archival imagery, and analytical layouts to mirror the logic of classification and control inherent in the prison environment. Through its restrained design, the project bridges documentation and interpretation — presenting the tattoo not merely as a mark on skin, but as a visual archive of power, belonging, and resistance.
